Storytelling Circle

Storytelling is a powerful means of sharing narratives and experiences that allows individuals to connect emotionally with others, fostering understanding, compassion, and the ability to see the world from different perspectives, promoting empathy and building bridges of empathy between people.

Storytelling Circle

Here's a children's activity guide for emotional development and empathy through a Storytelling Circle:

Activity: Storytelling Circle

Age Group: 6-12 years old

Instructions:

       1. Begin by explaining to the child that storytelling is a powerful way to develop empathy by putting themselves in the shoes of different characters and understanding their experiences.

       2. Gather a group to participate in the Storytelling Circle.

       3. Explain that each person will have a turn to share a story, and the others will listen attentively. Encourage active listening and respectful engagement throughout the activity.

       4. Start the Storytelling Circle by sharing a short story or anecdote that highlights empathy, kindness, or understanding. This sets the tone for the activity and provides an example for the children.

       5. Pass a small object (such as a stuffed animal or a special stone) around the circle. The person holding the object has the floor and can share their story.

       6. Encourage the children to share stories that revolve around empathy, understanding, or acts of kindness. They can create fictional stories or share personal experiences.

       7. After each story, allow time for the other children to reflect and ask questions. Encourage them to show empathy and understanding towards the storyteller.

       8. Continue passing the object around the circle, giving each child an opportunity to share their story.

       9. If desired, after everyone has had a turn, facilitate a group discussion about the stories shared. Ask the children to reflect on the emotions and experiences of the characters in the stories. Discuss how empathy played a role in the stories and how they can apply empathy in their own lives.

       10. Conclude the activity by expressing gratitude for each child's participation and their willingness to share their stories.

Remember, the goal of this activity is to help children develop empathy skills through storytelling and active listening. Encourage open communication and provide a safe and non-judgmental space for them to explore and discuss their emotions. Enjoy the Storytelling Circle activity with the children!
