Objective: To promote social development and assertiveness skills among children through engaging in group discussions.


Materials Needed:

       - Chairs or cushions arranged in a circle


Instructions:

       1. Introduction (5 minutes):

              - Gather the children in a circle and explain the purpose of the activity: to practice assertiveness skills through group discussions.

              - Emphasize the importance of expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs confidently and respectfully.


       2. Setting the Ground Rules (5 minutes):

              - Establish a set of ground rules together with the children.                      Examples may include:

                            - One person speaks at a time.

                            - Listen attentively to others.

                            - Use kind and respectful language.

                            - Encourage everyone's participation.


       3. Topic Selection (10 minutes):

              - Explain that the group will engage in discussions on various topics related to assertiveness.

              - Ask the children to suggest topics they would like to discuss.                      Examples may include:

                            - Standing up to bullying

                            - Expressing opinions in a group

                            - Asking for help when needed

                            - Saying "no" to peer pressure

                            - Write down their suggestions on a whiteboard or flip chart.

                            - Select one topic to start the discussion.


       4. Group Discussions (30-40 minutes):

              - Begin the discussion by introducing the selected topic and its relevance to assertiveness.

              - Encourage the children to share their thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on the topic.

              - Facilitate the discussion by asking open-ended questions and encouraging active participation from all children.

              - Ensure that each child has an opportunity to speak and share their ideas.

              - Foster a supportive environment where children can express themselves confidently and respectfully.

              - Encourage the children to listen attentively to each other and respond with empathy and respect.


        5. Reflection and Conclusion (5-10 minutes):

              - Summarize the key assertiveness strategies discussed during the activity.

              - Ask the children to reflect on what they have learned about expressing themselves confidently and respectfully.

              - Discuss practical ways they can apply these skills in their daily lives.

              - Express appreciation for their active participation and willingness to engage in meaningful group discussions.


Remember, the goal of this activity is to help children develop their assertiveness skills and build confidence in expressing themselves. Encourage them to actively listen, share their thoughts, and respond respectfully to others. By engaging in group discussions, they can practice assertiveness in a supportive and collaborative environment.
