Listening Circles

Here's a children's activity guide for social development focusing on active listening through listening circles:

Activity: Listening Circles

Materials needed: None

Instructions:

       1. Explain to the child what a listening circle is - a group activity where participants take turns speaking while others actively listen without interruption or judgment.

       2. Discuss the importance of active listening in effective communication, empathy, and building connections with others.

       3. Gather the participants in a circle, ensuring that everyone has a clear view of each other.

       4. Explain the rules of the listening circle: one person will be the speaker while the others will be active listeners. The speaker will have a designated amount of time to share their thoughts, feelings, or experiences while the listeners focus on listening attentively.

       5. Start the listening circle by selecting a volunteer to be the first speaker. Encourage them to share something meaningful, such as a personal story, a reflection, or their thoughts on a specific topic.

       6. Remind the listeners to maintain eye contact, nod or provide non-verbal cues to show understanding, and refrain from interrupting or offering advice.

       7. After the speaker finishes sharing, allow a moment of silence before moving on to the next speaker. This allows time for reflection and transition.

       8. Continue the listening circle, giving each participant an opportunity to be the speaker. Encourage them to share openly and honestly while the others actively listen.

       9. Emphasize the importance of confidentiality and creating a safe space where participants feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences.

      10. Reflect on the listening circle experience together. Discuss how it felt to actively listen, the challenges faced, and the insights gained from hearing others' perspectives.

      11. Encourage participants to apply active listening skills in their everyday interactions, such as with family members, friends, or classmates. Remind them to be present, attentive, and engaged in their conversations.

Remember, the purpose of this activity is to promote social development, active listening, empathy, and effective communication through listening circles.

Encourage the child and the participants to actively participate, respect each other's ideas, and enjoy the process of listening and being heard. Enjoy the growth and deeper connections that come from active listening in listening circles!
